Magna keep Bundesliga top spot
Magna Wiener Neustadt stay on top of the Austrian Bundesliga after beating Rapid Vienna away from home yesterday (Sun).
The team of Rapid legend Peter Schöttel – who performed more than 500 times for the tradition-rich Viennese club – started better into the game. Johannes Aigner scored the opening goal with a header just 11 minutes into the game, before a header by Guido Burgstaller 14 minutes later ensured a 2-0 lead.
Rapid failed to up their game, but nevertheless had a dozen decent chances to equalise the score after the goal by striker Nikica Jelavic in the 73rd minute.
The home side was in possession of the ball for 65 per cent of the match and had 15 corners, while Wiener Neustadt only had three in front of 15,500 fans at the almost sold out Gerhard Hanappi Stadium.
Sturm Graz also have six points after two rounds. The team of Franco Foda beat Kapfenberg 2-0. Mattersburg suffered a shock 1-4 home defeat against SV Ried, while LASK Linz lost to Austria Vienna 3-4 in a dramatic match.
The match between Red Bull Salzburg and Wacker Innsbruck had to be called off after 24 hours of massive rainfall. It would have been the first league match played on a natural grass pitch in the Red Bull Arena which was controversially equipped with an artificial grass layer when it was built in 2003. Club bosses ordered to have the natural grass pitch laid out for around 500,000 Euros only ahead of this season.
