Federer too strong once more for Melzer
Jürgen Melzer fought a courageous battle as he lost against Roger Federer at the US Open last night (Mon).
The Swiss number two in world tennis beat the Lower Austrian in two hours and three minutes (3-6, 6-7 (4-7), 3-6). Federer now faces Swede Robin Söderling in the quarter finals.
Melzer said: "I played really well and felt very, very comfortable on the court."
The 30-year-old beat Russian Dmitry Tursunov, Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis and Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero before Federer knocked him out.
Melzer has had a successful year so far after he sensationally entered the French Open semi finals before reaching the round of the best 16 at Wimbledon. He lost to Rafael Nadal, currently number one in the world, in Paris before Federer beat him in London and New York.
Melzer – who will compete at Vienna’s BA Tennis Trophy next month – could improve slightly in the ATP ranking due to his achievements at the US Open.
Meanwhile, Styrian Oliver Marach and Pole Lukasz Kubot reached the quarter finals of the US Open’s doubles event. The fifth-seed pairing beat Portuguese-Spanish team Federico Gil / Daniel Gimeno Traver in three sets (2-6, 6-3, 6-4) yesterday.
